WHAT IS THE
INTERNATIONAL REGISTRATION PLAN (IRP)?

The International Registration Plan (IRP) is a cooperative agreement among the contiguous United States, the District of Columbia, and Canadian provinces that facilitates the collection and distribution of commercial vehicle registration fees based on distance traveled in participating jurisdictions.

This system allows trucking companies to register their fleets under a single jurisdiction while paying appropriate fees to others where their vehicles operate.

WHO NEEDS IRP REGISTRATION?

You are required to register under IRP if your commercial vehicle:

  • Has a gross vehicle weight of 26,000 pounds or more,
  • Has three or more axles, regardless of weight,
  • Or is part of a combination (truck and trailer) that exceeds 26,000 pounds.

This registration ensures legal interstate or interprovincial operation.

IRP PLATES & APPORTIONED REGISTRATION

Once your IRP and IFTA (International Fuel Tax Agreement) accounts are established, you'll receive:

  • An Apportioned License Plate for your power unit (truck or tractor).
  • An IRP Cab Card, listing all jurisdictions in which the vehicle is authorized to operate.

These credentials allow seamless travel across state and provincial borders, ensuring compliance with local transportation laws.
